Vice President Joe Biden takes the oath of office in an official swearing-in ceremony at the Naval Observatory.
Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor was hand-picked by the second in command to administer the oath, making her the first Hispanic judge to ever to do so for the two highest-ranking positions in U.S. office. Previously, only three women have sworn-in vice presidents and presidents: Judge Sarah T. Hughes, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and Justice Ruth Ginsburg.
