Morehouse College had plenty of reasons to celebrate this past weekend!

The Atlanta-based HBCU marked its 158th anniversary on Friday (Feb. 14) by launching its “Campus of The Future” construction initiative. As reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the college broke ground on a new campus center and residence hall, marking the first new construction at Morehouse since 2010.

Construction on the 58,000 sq. ft. campus center and 88,000 sq. ft. residence hall (with more than 300 beds) is part of a broader effort to modernize the main campus. The effort is moving forward thanks to a $20 million donation award from the Woodruff Foundation. Morehouse hopes its alumni and other supporters will also contribute to the fundraising effort.

“We hope that you, our community of support, will continue to invest in building the Campus of the Future at Morehouse, so that we can provide more state-of-the-art spaces and places for our scholars to live, learn and grow into the men of distinction that they are destined to become,” the college’s president, David A. Thomas, said during Friday’s groundbreaking.

The construction is part of Morehouse’s “Making Men of Consequence” campaign. The $500 million fundraising effort was launched in 2022, looking to drive investment in scholarships, athletics, faculty research and improvements to campus.

So far, the campaign has raised $320 million. With the funds raised, Morehouse has renovated the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel, B.T. Harvey Stadium, and Edwin C. Moses Track and Field.

This past Wednesday (Feb. 12), Morehouse announced a $5 million endowed scholarship for financially struggling business & technology majors. The scholarship, a gift from retired Walgreens CEO L. Daniel Jorndt, serves as a lifeline for students who want to attend Morehouse but have difficulty paying for tuition.

“Not only will this gift change the lives of our students, but it will also help Morehouse continue to produce a pipeline of men who lead and serve with distinction and strive to build bridges of unity and equity in the world,” Pres. Thomas said in a news release.
