“When God has given you the green light, you can’t go back, you can’t stop,” SEMAJE said during the interview. “No matter what comes your way, just keep going forward.” He wanted the song to feel like a blessing and an affirmation—something to lift listeners up without diving into the pain gospel music sometimes leans on.

Born and raised in Detroit, SEMAJE grew up surrounded by musical greatness, from the Clark Sisters and Commissioned to Aretha Franklin and Jay Moss—whom he credits as a personal hero. But instead of imitating his idols, SEMAJE said their influence taught him to lean into his own unique voice.

“I didn’t wanna insult God by trying to be something else that He did not call me to be,” he shared. “God has given me a voice, and I just kept moving forward with it.”

That forward motion took him to a music conference hosted by Grammy-winning producer Fred Jerkins, a moment that became a turning point in his career. SEMAJE revealed that he wasn’t chasing a deal at the time—he just wanted to learn the business side of the industry. He showed up as the only artist in the room and left with more than just knowledge.

“I got a text message from Fred on my way home—on the plane, just before takeoff,” he recalled. “He said, ‘Man, I looked you up on YouTube, you are absolutely amazing. I want to do a song with you.’” That unexpected blessing reinforced what his parents always taught him: Seek God first, and everything else will follow.
