Research Shows Singing in a Choir Has Health Benefits

Make a joyful noise to the Lord! Because He’s worthy… and because it’s great for your health.
Research shows that singing in a choir for just one hour can reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost your immune system! A 2016 study by Tenovus Cancer Care and the Royal College of Music tested 193 members of five different choirs. Results from the study showed that singing for an hour was associated with significant reductions in stress hormones, like cortisol, and increases in cytokines, which are proteins of the immune system, that can boost the body’s ability to fight serious illness. Dr. lan Lewis, Director of Research and Policy at Tenovus Cancer Care said: “These are really exciting findings. We have been building a body of evidence over the past six years to show that singing in a choir can have a range of social, emotional, and psychological benefits, and now we can see it has biological effects too.” Well, look at God… we don’t even need a prescription! Can you carry a tune?… go ahead join the choir. Since I was a child, it definitely continues to bring me joy.
